Auckland reunion update
News Letter 23 September 05

Greetings all,

This is to let you know what your reunion committee has been doing to date.

We have been working hard to ensure a good time is had by all.  All the venues are booked and confirmed and we have been toiling away on the 100 & 1 things that need to be done.

If there is anyone who wishes to offer his voluntary services immediately prior and during the reunion, please contact Ron Sheehan at the Naval Sports Club, Private Bag 32901, Devonport, North Shore City; or by telephoning him on 09 4455239.

The website http://HMNZSTaranaki.org is proving popular and many registrations have been received from it. Mail registrations will close on 10 October 2005. So do not miss out.  After that date, people will still be able to register at the door, but be aware that you may not be able to enjoy the supper/dance or similar activities. We need to close these off to enable the caterers a fair go.

Birkenhead RSA - has advised us that during the reunion their normal cafeteria will still be operating between 1730 and 2000.  For the duration of the reunion all who have registered will be granted temporary membership of the RSA.

Temporary membership of the RSA has been granted to all those registered for the reunion.  When entering the RSA, please ensure you report to the concierge, who will have a list of attendees.

Transport - an “on demand” transport service has been arranged.  A shuttle will be available at the RSA for the duration of the reunion. A 45 seater bus has also been arranged for Sunday to transport people to and from the church service and barbeque.

Church Service

The committee have been working closely with the Naval Chaplain, who has been very generous and supportive.  A commemorative handout has been produced for the service and a wreath purchased. As in the past, the service at HMNZS Philomel appears to be a memorable occasion.

PLEASE NOTE – Due to security regulations, entry to HMNZS Philomel will only be granted upon production of photo identification.  Please ensure you bring one, or you will not be permitted to enter the gates.

Photos

At the conclusion of the church service “up spirits” and a barbeque is arranged at the Ngataringa Bay Sports Club, where photos will be taken.  The photographer will take orders, payment and mail them onto you.

Entertainment – We have arranged entertainment at the RSA for Saturday and Sunday night.  A lively programme has been arranged.

Raffles

As with previous reunions raffles will be run.  We have had several desirable items donated, some of which will never be available again.

Clothing

A reunion “T” shirt and cap will be available for purchase.  Orders will be taken during the reunion and the items sent to you directly from the manufacturer. Photos of the both the “T” shirt and cap may be seen at the Taranaki website.

Registrations

A registration form and programme has been sent to all of you on the email list.  The committee appreciate that there are some who do not have email, so if you know of anyone who needs the information, please print it off and send it to them. Also, as the Secretary, I would appreciate any updated email/mailing addresses. On the subject of registrations only sailors need register and pay the registration fee.

Remembrance

The Navy is undergoing an exercise to name several of its buildings in honour of past ships.  The committee have applied to Philomel to have the Fire School changing rooms named the “Taranaki” block.  We have been promised a reply to this application before the reunion.

Finally, we still need final numbers for those wishing to go on the boat trip on Saturday 22 October 05.  This is required so that we can inform the ferry company, who need to know what size vessel to provide.

Finally….    Don’t leave your registration and payment for meals,
        etc until the last minute.

See you at the reunion
